- A Missed Opportunity: How Inconsistent Internet May Cost Businesses Big
A few Saturdays ago in Falmouth, MA, my wife and I enjoyed a day out, capped off by an evening at the Commodores Cape Cod league baseball game. While everything was fantastic, one incident left me pondering the hidden costs of unreliable internet - for both businesses and customers. My wife found herself stuck in a long line at a store due to credit card processing issues. Sitting outside with our dog, Max, I witnessed a revolving door of frustrated customers entering the store only to leave immediately upon seeing the queue. In the ten minutes I observed, at least 15 people walked away, presumably put off by the wait. This incident sparked a question: How much revenue did this store lose because of the lines caused by a poor internet connection? Now, credit card transactions themselves generally require minimal bandwidth. But the bigger issue lies in the ripple effect caused by slow or unstable internet. Here's how: Frustration and Lost Sales: Customers facing long lines due to processing delays are more likely to abandon their purchases and head elsewhere. This lost business directly impacts the store's bottom line. Negative Customer Experience: Slow internet creates a negative in-store experience, potentially damaging customer loyalty and encouraging them to take their business elsewhere in the future. Impact on Reputation: Word-of-mouth travels fast. A single negative experience can spread quickly, deterring other potential customers from visiting. My colleagues also reported similar issues at other stores in Falmouth that day. This suggests that unreliable internet might be a more widespread problem in the area. The Takeaway: For businesses, reliable internet is no longer a luxury - it's a necessity. In a competitive marketplace, a slow internet connection can be a significant disadvantage. The story from Falmouth highlights how seemingly minor internet issues can translate into major revenue losses and customer dissatisfaction. Investing in reliable internet infrastructure is a smart business decision, allowing businesses to operate efficiently, provide a smooth customer experience, and stay competitive. - The Statewide 911 Outage Highlights Urgent Need for Redundant Infrastructure
The headline in Hiawatha Bray's article at the Boston Globe today says it all "A statewide 911 crash is not supposed to happen." At OpenCape, we're committed to fostering a thriving community and we are an integral part of this service, OpenCape powers the connection to the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office which operates an Emergency Communications Center located on Joint Base Cape Cod which is responsible for the dispatch of emergency 911 calls for many municipalities across Cape Cod . While yesterday's statewide outage has nothing to do with OpenCape or the Barnstable County Sherriff. It highlights the importance in having robust and reliable infrastructure. Just like the foundation of a house, our infrastructure – especially our internet infrastructure – needs to be strong and well-maintained to support our growing needs. Many of our current systems were built years ago, and haven't kept pace with the demands of today's digital world. This aging infrastructure can lead to outages, slowdowns, and frustration for residents and businesses alike. Redundancy: The Key to Reliability One of the biggest concerns with aging infrastructure is a lack of redundancy. Imagine a bridge with only one lane – if there's an accident, the entire flow of traffic grinds to a halt. Similarly, if a single point of failure occurs in our current internet system, large portions of the community could lose connectivity. Building a More Resilient Future OpenCape is actively exploring solutions to address these challenges. One key focus is on building redundancy into our infrastructure. This means having multiple pathways for data to travel, so that if one route goes down, others can pick up the slack, minimizing disruption. By investing in a more modern and redundant infrastructure, we can ensure: Improved reliability: Fewer outages and disruptions for everyone. Enhanced performance: Faster internet speeds and smoother online experiences. Greater resilience: The ability to withstand unexpected challenges and keep our community connected. Working Together for a Brighter Tomorrow OpenCape is committed to working with residents, businesses, and policymakers to develop a comprehensive plan for upgrading our infrastructure. Stay tuned for future updates and opportunities to get involved. Together, we can build a future-proofed community where everyone has access to the reliable and high-speed internet they deserve.

- OpenCape applies for Mass Broadband GAP Grants
Our phone rang off the hook last week with questions from towns, and each conversation was the same. “We have been asked for a letter of support from Comcast and Verizon”, what should we do? For each person, we simply made sure they asked these providers the same questions I would be expected to be asked if OpenCape had made such a request for a letter of support. To begin, let me clear up some facts and details. The maximum amount available to any provider from the MBI Gap Networks Grant Program is $20M. Grant funding requires a 20% match; $20M would fund connectivity to approximately 10,000 homes. The simple questions we asked were: Does this letter of support confirm you will be building in our town? If so, how many homes will you pass? On what streets? What type of service will it be? To date, we have not seen any example of the incumbent providers providing that level of detail or 100% confirmation of such builds. During a regional call with the incumbents and the Cape Cod Tech Council, they seemed to go above and beyond to not provide specifics. To be direct, yes OpenCape applied for a GAP Grant for a Cape town and if awarded we will be further expanding our 1Gig, 5Gig, 10Gig service in that town. You can count on that! – Steve Johnston, CEO & Executive Director, OpenCape
- OpenCape Connects 272 Residences at Hanover Hyannis to 10GB Fiber Internet
If you are considering rental space at the new residences at Hanover Hyannis (located near BJ’s and Cape Cod Healthcare’s Wilkens Urgent Care Center) rest assured that internet connectivity will be robust and future-focused. OpenCape is providing a 10Gig dedicated fiber circuit to service residents. OpenCape CEO Steve Johnston commented, “Affordable housing is a necessity for our region. Part of that housing solution must be to ensure that every resident and every family, regardless of their economic situation, have access to robust, reliable, and affordable internet service. This is the conduit by which people go to school, work remotely, access healthcare and other benefits. It is a core component of every housing solution, and OpenCape is working tirelessly to ensure every unit built in our region has this access.”
- Dark Money Campaigns Confirm OpenCape’s Strategy of Fostering Choice and Competition
You may have recently noticed an influx in TV, print, email, and radio advertisements from a cryptic, shadowy organization called “Mass Priorities”. While the source of their reported $500,000 ad campaign remains cloudy, it is a safe bet to assume that the incumbent providers who service our region are responsible. I mention it today not to give any credence to their message, but rather to alert people that the sole purpose of this campaign is to confuse and bewilder communities, to have you second guess your instinct when someone is pulling the wool over your eyes. The link to this story addresses many of the details, but I think it is necessary to point out the absurdity of any strategy that promotes confusing customers versus just focusing on providing a great product and amazing customer service. The fact that someone in power thought this was a solid plan demonstrates how little the incumbents think about the role they play in our communities. From my perspective, these dark money campaigns send an incredibly clear signal that the incumbents are terrified of any level of choice or competition, and that is exactly what we will keep doing.
